Rotating your tires is a good practice to ensure even tread wear and extend the life of your tires. If the front tires are more worn than the rear ones, rotating them can help balance the wear. Here are some general tips for tire rotation, from the service department at Volvo Cars Royal Oak.
- Regular Intervals: Rotate your tires every (8,000 to 13,000 kilometers). We inspect the tires for wear, damage and pressure with each maintenance service.
- Pattern: Follow the recommended rotation pattern for your vehicle. Dependent on model, some models have different offsets and can not be rotated. Otherwise, TPMS problems may occur.
- Check Alignment: Ensure your wheels are properly aligned to prevent uneven wear. Maintenance alignment recommended once a year. Excessively out of adjustment alignment will show itself in uneven or excessive tire wear.
- Balance Tires: Balancing your tires during rotation can also help improve ride quality and extend tire life. Snow/ice buildup on inside of wheels for long durations can affect balance even after snow/ice is melted.
When tires are nearing the end of their tread life, it’s generally safer to have the best tread on the rear tires. This helps maintain better directional stability, especially in wet or slippery conditions, reducing the risk of oversteer and loss of control. Replacing worn tires with new ones is the safest option. New tires provide better traction, handling, and overall safety, especially in adverse weather conditions. It’s always a good idea to regularly check your tire tread depth and replace them when they reach the minimum safe tread depth.
